Add page Meta Description

Use this guide to add metadata to every page on your website.

Metadata is information about your content that allows users to find what they're looking for. When you get your metadata right, search engines will rank your information higher.

What is a meta description?

A page's meta description gives Google and other search engines a summary of what the page is about. It also helps the reader decide whether they should visit the page.

The description will be displayed as a snippet under the meta title in search results on your website and on external search engines.

There are two ways the meta description can be added:

Step 1: Open properties

Option 1: From the page

  • Select the Page information icon in the top left of the screen.
  • Select Open Properties

Option 2: From sites view.

  • Navigate through to your website to the page you want to add a meta description to.
  • Once you have found your page, select the icon to the left of the page. A tick will appear and your selection will turn blue.
  • Select Properties in the menu bar that appears across the top of the screen.

Step 2: Add the meta description

  • Enter your description into the Meta Description field.
  • We suggest you use the name of your school in your meta descriptions as it will help your community and prospective parents find your website.
  • For example your meta description on a school plan page could be: At Fern Hill Public School, we provide a 3 year school plan and annual report to improve our teaching outcome.
  • Select Save & Close.

Step 3: publish the page

  • The meta description will appear in search results after you publish the page.
  • See publish a page for more information.
